Phuket to Host the Fourth Asian Beach Games 2014

The island province of Phuket will host the Fourth Asian Beach Games in 2014. Phuket Governor Tri Augkaradacha told a group of more than 20 foreign journalists based in Bangkok that athletes from 45 countries will attend this international sports event.

The foreign journalists interviewed the Phuket Governor during their press tour of Phuket, organized by the Foreign Office, Government Public Relations Department, on 28 and 29 April 2011.

Later, on 3 May 2011, the Cabinet approved the proposal by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports for the organizing of the Asian Beach Games in Phuket. The Directing Committee of the Fourth Asian Beach Games is chaired by the Prime Minister, while the Minister of Tourism and Sports chairs the Organizing Committee. Other committees will be responsible for the secretariat, security and traffic, technical matters, finance and budgeting, marketing, accommodation and food, transportation, public relations, and medical and hygiene services.

The objectives of the Games are to encourage people to be interested in and play sports, to promote sports and tourism, and to give personnel experience in organizing sports events at an international level.

Karon and Pa Tong beaches are two major sports centers to be used as the venues for the Games. Only certain events, such as paragliding and the triathlon, need to be held outside the venues. The Games, scheduled for early November 2014, require a budget of 630.19 million baht. The financial support will come from the national budget for the 2014-2015 fiscal years. It is expected that around 16 to 17 sports will be included in the Games.

The Phuket Governor said that Phuket province is boosting sports activities in its tourism campaigns. It will organize diverse sports events throughout the year.

He said that Phuket, with a population of 340,000, earns about 100 billion baht from tourism. Each year it hosts about 6.5 million tourists who come mainly from Europe and Asia to appreciate the natural beauty and cultural attractions of this island.

According to the Governor, Chinese and South Korean investors are interested in investing in a light rail project in Phuket and the construction of an international convention and exhibition center will begin in August this year. The construction of the center, which will be the largest one in Asia, will be completed in 2012. The expansion of the Phuket International Airport, now underway, will also be completed in 2012.

With the light rail project and other facilities, Phuket is likely to welcome even more visitors. The province is making efforts to develop its tourism on a sustainable basis.
